As part of Project Matheran, I have already trekked to Matheran via Rambaug Point, Garbett , Peb fort, One Tree Hill & Sunset point . I wanted to finish all the trekking routes to Matheran as quickly as possible. Next in my line up was the Hashyachi Patti trek to Matheran which ends at Malang point or Louisa Point. Some start towards Hashaychi Patti from Umbarne Ambewadi side while I decided to do it from Dhodani village. In this Hashyachi Patti trek blog you will find all the information to plan this trek yourself. Similar adventures like this one at the end of the post.

Matheran is one of the most famous hill stations in India where vehicles are not allowed. Normal tourists reach Matheran via the Neral toy train or just drive on the normal road to reach Dasturi Naka ( which is the entrance point of Matheran). These tourists then visit different view points of Matheran by walking or on a horse. However adventure lovers like me love to reach Matheran by trekking from base village to these view points & then descend by some other point or return from Dasturi Naka.

Is Hashyachi Patti Trek to Matheran difficult for beginners ?

Hashyachi Patti Trek is a simple ascend trek without any risky patches from Dhodani side. However the trail is not used as much as it was in older days. Hence you will find lots of leaves fallen on track and almost nil crowd on these routes. Due to the isolated nature of the trail I will term it as an Intermediate trek which will require knowledge of identifying mountain routes. The route is properly marked however major trail to reach Hashyachi patti is through dense jungle and can become confusing for some. One stream which I crossed in Winter might have too much water in monsoon.

How long is Hashyachi Patti Trek ?

Niraj, how much time does it take to complete this Matheran trek ? It takes 2.5 -3 hours to reach the top at full speed from Dhodhani village to Malang point via Hashyachi Patti. It will take more time if you take frequent stops for rest , water , food or photography

What is the best time for Hashyachi Patti Trek

All Matheran treks are perfect monsoon treks. Winter provides its own twist with beautiful sunsets & sunrises. This treks are also worthy of summer time because once you toil through all the climb Matheran provides with a very cool weather ( should preferably start early morning). Hence I term it as an all weather trek. Mostly trekkers do this trek on monsoon morning. But i also prefer to do this Hashyachi Patti Matheran trek on winter evenings to enjoy the sunset from Louisa Point or from Malang point.

Iss Matheran trek me Khane ko kya milega ?

Since its not that famous there are no food huts through the trail. There are shops available in Dhodani village as well as at Malang point. Through the trek you will come across 1 stream crossing which dries up in winter. So stock up before the trek.

How to reach Hashyachi Patti Trek to Matheran Louisa Point ?

Matheran’s Malang point is very close by to Hashyachi Patti village, the trek to this village constitutes most part of this trek. Hashyachi patti can be reached by trekking from Dhodani ( Panvel side) or from Umbarnewadi – Ambewadi village ( Chowk-Karjat side). I have detailed the Dhodani side trek in this blog because of the ease of access & I will detail the other route shortly.

Dhodani village is 20kms from Panvel. You can reach Dhodani village & trek to Matheran’s Malang point or Louisa point. After reaching Matheran if you dont want to descend back then you can head to Matheran market reach Dasturi Naka, take a taxi to Neral Station or you can do it the other way round

Nearest Railway Station is Panvel Station

Base Village for Hashyachi Patti Trek to Matheran is Dhodani

Public Transport to reach Dhodani

  • Dodhani village is well connected by ST bus from Panvel stand. From my discussion with locals i understood that there are ST bus from 7 am till 7 pm from Panvel to Dodhani on hourly basis. The same bus returns to Panvel after ever hour from Dhodani- the last bus from Dhodhani is at 7 pm. Ticket costs Rs 30.
  • The shared EECO for Dhodani from Panvel are available from under the highway bridge near the Ambedkar statue (Rs. 50). In case you book the complete EECO the price may vary from Rs. 400 – 600
  • In case you dont find these direct options you can get plenty of options to reach Nere in Rs 30 from where you can get another rickshaw to drop at Dhodani.

Private Vehicle : Just add Dhodani on Google Maps and enjoy this beautiful drive. Roads are very good as on Jan 2023

Matheran Range Trek Ideas

Many Matheran points are trekkable. These points include One Tree Hill Pt. from Ambewadi, Rambaug Pt via Dhanwadi, Alexander Pt via Katwan, Beatrice Pt via Katwan, Sunset Pt from Dhodani, Garbett Pt from Bhivpuri, Malang pt via Hashyachi Patti, Pisarnath Ladder route via Umbarnewadi, Peb fort from Anandwadi. So for doing a range trek you can trek to any of these points and then descend to another point. If some of you are tired after the ascend they can simply skip the remaining part of the range trek by taking a taxi from Dasturi Naka ( Matheran’s entrance). My personal choice is to select Garbett for descend since it is better connected with railways for going home easily after a tiring Matheran range trek.

For this Hashaychi Patti Trek I prefer to reach Dhodani, trek to Malang Point & descend via Sunset point trek as both these points are near by and the end point would be the same Dhodani village. This would be a perfect round trip.

Want to travel full time ?

The most common question that i get asked is I want to travel a lot but I dont have leaves. Should I quit my job ? I have always suggested to not quit your job unless you have another source of income. In search of this source of income I tried freelancing , trek leading, vlogging and I realised nothing works in the long term. After trying many different thinkgs finally I came across trading

Trading for getting freedom & income is perfect for a person with traveller mindset. You can trade from anywhere around the world be it some off the grid village in Himachal or Meghalaya, be it some island in Andaman. All you need is an internet connection and a trading account. You can earn by trading for 1-2 hrs a day and would have freedom to do anything in the free time.Or you might have just earned enough in a day to take the month off travelling around the world. If you are able to learn this then it has potential to make all your dreams come true. I would suggest you take it up as a side project for 6 months to see if you have patience & intellect to master it.

Hashyachi Patti Trek to Matheran blog : TheFreeBird’s Story

As part of my personal #ProjectMatheran i am covering all the treks in Matheran region. In the last week of Dec 2022 I witnessed the sunset from One Tree hill Trek to Matheran overlooking the great Morbe Dam. In the first week of 2023 i went to enjoy the sunset from Matheran’s sunset point . During that Dhodani trek I found that there is another route from Dhodani to Matheran via Hashyachi Patti & I planned this as my next trek. I got on my bike and started towards Dodhani village on a cold winter morning. The roads are very good and in no time I reached Gadeshwar dam ( just before Dhodani village).

Gadeshwar dam provides a scenic view of Chanderi fort. No wonder many people like to chill here in the evening. I wanted to stay here longer but I was on a mission to chase the sunset from Matheran top. In another 10 minutes I reached Dodhani village which seemed to be preparing for some festival at the temple near the bus stand.

Dhodani Trek to Matheran via Hashyachi Patti
Dodhani covered by hills on 3 sides is heavenly in monsoon. Peb fort is easily visible

Parking my bike at the Dodhani bus stand we walked through the village towards the Sunset point which is clearly visible from the village. The route for sunset point & Hashyachi Patti are same for 5 minutes till the Banyan tree. At this tree left goes to Sunset point trek while the right goes to Chinchwadi. Walking towards Chinchwadi we met a dirt road which looks motorable. I could have taken my Xpluse directly to Chinchwadi had i known this earlier. Would have definitely saved 20 minutes of walking.

Enquiring about the Hashyachi Patti route with locals I realised that there is well marked route right till the top. After this village the route passes through paddy fields where we come across many tamarind (चिंच ) trees. These got me excited as I threw many stones at these चिंच but my throwing arm seems to have lost its skill as compared to my childhood days. We then enter the jungle which canopies the route right till the final steep climb to hashyachi patti.

After walking for like 30 minutes we reached a big dry stream which I am sure would have a substantial flow in monsoon. Here in winter the air was rife with a strong smell just like the raatraani flowers. I tried to find the source but was not able to.

After this stream the climb gets a bit steeper & jungle gets dense with bigger trees and more birds audible. I consciously kept silent though this trek to feel one with jungle. I just love birds chirping. Some mighty say no surprise Niraj you are TheFreeBird.

As we climb higher it appears to be a waterfall route & would be lovely walking here in monsoon. These stones keep on getting more in number as we reach the final steep climb. All this moderate climb through jungle was very peaceful indeed and now the final steep route till Hashyachi Patti remained. Mid way on the steep climb I looked back to find that we had walked a lot.

Finally after the climb we reached the ridge of Hashaychi Patti near the bench. This bench would definitely provide a beautiful view in the evening. Kalavantin & Prabalgad become visible after this climb. Hashyachi Patti is just 5 minutes from here.

Reaching Hashyachi Patti we met few kids playing cricket. On asking them a good place to have lunch they pointed at this jamoon tree with a elevated wooden floor. Seemed very rickety but it was a good lunch spot with views of Prabalgad & Kalavantin

Sunset was at 6 pm & I think I was 4 hours early hence we rested for some time after lunch before going ahead. We passed through the hamlet, had water at some random home & started climbing higher toward the famous British time stairs. One look back & the view was terrific . I could not wait for sunset to colour the skies.

The last part of climb was the stairs. Legend has it that these were built by British, but atleast the initial part appeared to concretised. Later on when we climb to the top we see some red stone stairs which seem to be older

Finally after 3 hours with lots of time pass we had reached the top near the Hashyachi Patti board at Matheran. The red omnipresent soil at Matheran welcomed us. We had arrived 3 hours before sunset & it was not worth visiting any of the Matheran point at 3 pm since the views would not be good with the bright sun. Malang point is just 2 mins from this board. I went there hesitantly to see a bright sun not painting a good picture

I realised it was just bad timing to go to any other points as the view wont be worth the efforts. Still not wanting to waste any time, after Malang point we decided to visit the near by points & return to Louisa point ( near by Malang point ) to enjoy the sunset. The order of sunset facing Matheran points are

Sunset pt – (Few more )- Coronation pt. – Malang pt. – Louisa Pt – Honeymoon point – Echo Point – (Many more)-One Tree HIll

I havent specified all the points because they are way too many & we only had time to visit like 2 more points on either side before catching sunset from Louisa point which I feel has the best view. We visited coronation & Honeymoon point to see disappointing afternoon views. Hence we reached Louisa & waited for the sunset.

Louisa point has one of the best sunsets Matheran has to offer. Due to the shape of this hillock it is called Lions point. I took some beautiful pics with my friend on the Lion’s head. When it was time for my photos the sun had already gone down.

From the extreme end we can see a great view of Matheran points right till One Tree Hill point on one side & Kalavantin Durg on the other side. On a tall rock in front of this point some dare devil had placed a Shivaji Maharaj idol right on top. Since i could not get the sunset in my pics I tried some dusk photography which was quite good

We sat there for some time hoping that the skies would show some lovely evening colours, but it was too cloudy for that . After waiting for some time we started our way back to Dhodani. Some can also take the Sunset point trek route to Dhodani or just walk to Dasturi Naka ( Matheran’s entrance) & take a taxi to Neral railway station to go home. Since my bike was parked at Dhodani I took the Hashyachi Patti route to Dhodani with hopes that evening colours would be visible on the way down. My wish came true.

I reached down in about 75 minutes. Washed my face, got on by bike , drove home shivering in the super cold night.

Bye !!
