Located at the highest point of Lonavala Upper Deck provides the beautiful view of Valvan dam on one side & on the terrific view of Rajmachi fort on the other. Infact long before I visited here I knew this as a famous Lonavala hotel besides which the trail to Rajmachi trek passes. Many years after my trek I finally got to visit here. How to reach Upper Deck Resort ?

Lonavala is 104km from Mumbai (90 min) and 66km from Pune (60min). Upper Deck Resort is placed 3km from the Lonavala Bus / Railway Station & the famous Rajmachi trek trail called “Upper Deck trail to Rajmachi” passes by the resort. The resort is situated on a short hill which is connected by a proper motorable road. For people with personal vehicles drive straight to the hotel (location)

Things to do near by Upper Deck Lonavala

You might ask Niraj what should you do when you stay at Upper Deck? Well I like to stay at luxury hotels only when there is something worthwhile to do around the place. Rajmachi & Kataldhar are the most sought after things to do in Lonavla. Rajmachi Fort trek & Kataldhar waterfall Trek start point lie about 60 min & 30 min from Upper Deck by vehicle. If you decide to walk by a shortcut trail from the resort the Kataldhar trek start is just 3 kms. I would recommend Rajmachi for a short hike & Kataldhar for a tougher & equally beautiful trek. Apart from these there are few more near by spots like Korigad trek , Dukes Nose trek, Bhushi Dam & Tiger Point, KP falls trek, Lohagad trek, Visapur fort , Karla & Bhaje caves. You can plan the stay here for a day with another day reserved for any of these spots.

Upper Deck Resort Price ? Tariff is costly ?

The question I get asked most is Niraj whether Upper Deck is costly ? The answer for that is simple. Even I used to wonder whether a luxury stay at Rs 5000 is costly ? Over the last decade I have travelled length and breadth of India but always preferred cheap hotels & rich experiences over luxury. But some times in life you also need to pamper yourself. From the time i visited Upper Deck I have been to half a dozen luxury resorts in Lonavla with prices double , triple & even four times – but the spectacular views from here are unmatched. 😁So if you like to stay as close to nature with stunning views & good food this is a great option. Make sure to book it earlier to get better discounts.

My stay at Upper Deck Resort

While I was planning a trek to Rajmachi many years ago I came to know of the trail being named “Upper Deck trail” because of this hotel. Fast forward to 2023 I planned a stay at Upper Deck on my Lonavala trip. I took my bike on this trip. The approach road is a rough at certain spots but my adventure bike made it look easy. On reaching the resort entry I realised that the approach road to the resort at the top of the hill is made up of stone bricks.

My plan was to stay in a cottage but the entire lawn in front was being re-turfed & I didnt want to look at the red soil so instead decided to stay at Deluxe room to enjoy the beautiful views. Also on that day the office informed that they would not be having any room service hence it made sense to select the room nearest to dining. Not that the trekker in me had any problem with that but since I had the option to select nearest one I went ahead with the Deluxe room.

The room had all the basic amenities of a luxury stay. But I didnt wait in the room for long as I was already late to reach here and the swimming pool entry closes by 5 or 6pm.

I didnt know why it closes so early but once I got in the water I understood the reason. It’s very cold out here. I enjoyed the jacuzzi for sometime before it got too cold for me and decided to take in some sunlight along with the views. The best possible thing for upper deck is the stunning views it offers of Rajmachi on one side and the Valvan water dam on the other side. Valvan side looks good in the morning while Rajmachi side looks great throughout the day.

I chilled here for some time and visited to see the other facilities being offered here. I saw a children’s play park equipped with swings, see saws and others stuff where I saw a couple playing like kids. They may be like ” Paisa bhara hai toh poora vasool kar loo” . Near by it is the game room which had table tennis , chess and carrom. Adjacent room had a gym and spa where I didnt go. Going around the property was taking so much time that it was almost evening time, however the sun was just hiding behind a hill preventing a perfect sunset photo.

The evening lights adds so much life to this place. I could see Rajmachi fort and few lights below it indicating Udhewadi which is the base village for that trek. As the climate gets cooler some hot food felt much needed. I had opted for buffet and was on a starter eating spree.

The food was very tasty and I devoured it all. After sitting by the pool I called it a night. The next morning I was up early to enjoy sunrise from my room.

Getting ready I was on the lawn to enjoy the morning lights on Valvan dam. There is also an overhanging gallery which provides a perfect photo spot. I call it the Titanic spot.

The breakfast is served early here and I decided to be the first person in queue as I had to leave early for the Rajmachi trek. I had a heavy breakfast with all the parathas , eggs , sandwiches etc served buffet style & at live counters. At the same time I was just so happy looking outside the window as this looked like a perfect photo frame.

With a full stomach I started to pack my bags to head for a short Rajmachi trek. After I left the place I still keep on thinking about the beautiful views from here & would definitely visit here in monsoon to enjoy the area filled with clouds.
